April 2009

I currently have the opportunity to respond to a survey about social/human service needs in Davidson County for the Planning & Coordination Unit of Metropolitan Social Services.

I was fine up until Question 7, but now I’ve paused. It’s the “Please choose only one” that’s getting to me. I know dollars are stretched thin right now. They always are, and it’s worse this year than last year… but there will be a significant effort around “developing a long-term plan of action to address Nashville’s evolving needs” based on the outcome of this survey. Based on what the community thinks is the biggest unmet need… how can we possibly only choose ONE from this list? I know, I know, prioritize, and work down… still.

7. There are many unmet social/human service needs in Nashville. If you had to identify the greatest unmet need in Nashville, what would it be? (Please choose only one.)

Emergency Shelter

Home & Community Based Services-Children/Youth

I’d love to hear which answer you would select and why.

I’ve said it a number of times (not in this blog, but in personal interactions with others):  Healthcare expense is an approaching train wreck on a scale that none of us have yet witnessed. It’s like that old adage about the weather, “People talk a lot about it, but no one ever does anything!”

After calling Slate out for a missed opportunity last week, I simply have to make amends by directing you to this short article by Timothy Noah about healthcare costs. Hopefully the bar graph will wake some folks up.

People, seriously – please take care of your health, and support those that are working on ways to reduce the cost of healthcare and improve wellness services.

Be free,

Jeff
