Metro Nashville Planning and Coordination Survey Question 7
Posted by Jeff under Philanthropy[2] Comments
I currently have the opportunity to respond to a survey about social/human service needs in Davidson County for the Planning & Coordination Unit of Metropolitan Social Services.
I was fine up until Question 7, but now I’ve paused. It’s the “Please choose only one” that’s getting to me. I know dollars are stretched thin right now. They always are, and it’s worse this year than last year… but there will be a significant effort around “developing a long-term plan of action to address Nashville’s evolving needs” based on the outcome of this survey. Based on what the community thinks is the biggest unmet need… how can we possibly only choose ONE from this list? I know, I know, prioritize, and work down… still.
7. There are many unmet social/human service needs in Nashville. If you had to identify the greatest unmet need in Nashville, what would it be? (Please choose only one.)
Emergency Shelter
Transportation
Home & Community Based Services-Children/Youth
Food & Nutrition-Infants/Young Children
Home & Community Based Services-Elderly/Disabled
Workforce Development
Food & Nutrition-Elderly/Disabled
Food & Nutrition-School Age Children
Housing Financial Supports (Rental/Utility Assistance, etc.)
Subsidized Housing
Economic Opportunity
Other (please specify)
I’d love to hear which answer you would select and why.
Be free,
Jeff

As you stated, it’s really too difficult to choose just one and I don’t think that this is an issue specific to Nashville. However, I must admit that I would have difficulty in making this choice as I am not educated to all that Nashville currently offers in each of these areas. Transportation for example, I know that they have a relatively new bus system but I don’t know the routes, cost, or availability for the average Nashvillian. Please educate us and then we make an informed decision.

I would highlight workforce development, mainly because I had a long talk with Kenny, my brother-in-law and he is going back to school to learn a new trade, after being laid-off for 6 months and he was as excited as I have ever seen him. President Obama has implied that monies will be available, he supports education and we are in a prime spot to develop solar industries, with proper training, of course. Just a thought.
